Building future proof skills for the turbulent times

We can only see the past but yet need to prepare our people for the future – with old knowledge or new? Higher education institutions in Europe have an important role in creating the new knowledge for the next generations to prepare for future challenges. New innovation is invented every day, but the real challenge is to turn research findings into a format that can be scaled up and even sold as a commodity. What are the ingredients of an innovative ecosystems that need to be built around and near the higher education institutions if they want to be successful also in the future?

Experience of private HEI with synergies between education and research in economic and management issues

Currently, economic and management conditions are changing, and the importance of some issues increases, such as energy, healthcare or Green Deal policy. It is a challenge for education and research; however, the synergies between them are necessary. Is there a space for the contribution of private HEIs? What is their role? Diversity and multidisciplinary approaches are the keys. The presentation will focus on sharing the experience of private HEI with current challenges in up-to-date education and research areas.

How to build your project support office

Well-functioning project support is one of the main prerequisites for succeeding in obtaining the funding from EU programmes (such as Horizon Europe, Erasmus+ and others). This can be proven by many top- ranked universities. Yet, there is no one-size-fits-all manual on how to build the excellent support service and each institution has to find the most appropriate model for itself, which needs to reflect its strategy and focus. The session will showcase good examples of universities from Belgium and Estonia on how their research coordination office works and what kind of services they offer to their researchers in order to increase their participation in EU programmes.

European Student Card Initiative (ESCI): a versatile instrument leading Erasmus+ into the future

ESCI is an opportunity and a challenge at the same time to make the Erasmus+ programme viable for the future. This presentation strives to share the experience how the German National Agency (NA DAAD) and the digital expert’s network from higher education institutions (HEI) take on the challenges that none of them is in a position to meet alone. And which potential the joint effort is able to unlock at the HEIs as the ESCI affects the way in which the Erasmus+ programme is carried out.

Inclusion: consolidating and promoting resources and ideas

Providing international opportunities to non-traditional students is currently one of the hot topics in the HE sector. Many HEIs and NAs are trying to find appropriate measures on supporting those coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, having fewer opportunities, or facing different barriers. The sector is learning through many networking events, activities, and groups. We’ll discuss how to bring these resources, practices, and ideas together and further promote them to mainstream inclusive approaches.

How can we further strengthen the synergies between higher education and research at the different levels of policies, programmes and practice?

In this session, we aim to explore what synergies between education and research can be, what the prerequisites for them are and highlight some best practice examples in the EEA/Norway grants. A stronger connection between education and research will contribute to greater quality in both and exploiting synergies between them will enable HEIs to meet future challenges. Commitment from different actors – European institutions, national ministries and agencies and HEIs is needed to fulfil this goal.

Student mobility remade – new formats of mobility during Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to set up new digitally enhanced international experiences in view of limited physical mobility opportunities and has multiplied the applied models and arrangements beyond what we previously knew and could observe in practice. This ‘digital experiment’ of the last two years, has admittedly brought forward many challenges for institutions, staff and students but it has also brought new opportunities and possibilities in terms of enriching and widening the mobility experience. The aim of the panel is to assess the current state of play in digitally enhanced mobility formats and how HEIs, beneficiaries and NAs have been responding to them. The discussion will revolve around new mobility formats, how HEIs, beneficiairies and NAs have responded to them and what the future holds for digitalisation of internationalisation in higher education.

Micro-credentials: Empowering lifelong learners, Internationalisation and Reliable Recognition (Panel)

MicroCreds Project – A collaboration between Higher Education and Enterprise to empower lifelong learners in Ireland:

An introduction to the MicroCreds project, led by Irish Universities Association (IUA) in partnership with the seven founding IUA universities. Its vision is to empower lifelong learning in Ireland by re-imagining the learner’s relationship with education through agile, accessible and bite-sized qualifications: microcredentials. The presentation will give you an overview of the project so far with an honest review of the learnings along the way.

Micro-credentials and Internationalisation:

Micro-credentials address the skills gap and enable a rapid learning response to new societal and labour market demands. Hence, they are firmly set in the lifelong learning discourse. A recent DAAD survey conducted among German HEI revealed, however, that these small learning units are also regarded as an important tool to support internationalisation efforts and to make international (virtual) exchange more accessible. The presentation will highlight the major findings of the DAAD survey and introduces a (DAAD-funded) project from a German university which implemented micro-credentials in an internationalisation context.

The Importance of Reliable Recognition of Micro-Credentials:

Micro-credentials provide flexible and inclusive learning opportunities with a significant potential for the acquisition of future-proof skills. A number of universities have recently begun to notice the benefits of micro-credentials. However, there often is still hesitancy in recognizing these new forms of learning achievements. In an attempt to make micro-credentials more attractive to students, specific modules should be created to ensure their recognition. This presentation will give an example of a module dedicated to the recognition of micro-credentials offered within the European University for Customized Education (EUNICE).

European Universities – student view:

A representative from the Student Chamber of the Council of HEIs (SK RVŠ) will speak about the student view on current opportunities, which the European University Alliances bring to students. Moreover, the current challenges, especially in the field of promotion and participation of students in the governance will be presented.

Two Years of EuroTeQ Alliance – Students‘ Experiences and Insights:

EuroTeQ, an alliance of European technical universities, is an opportunity to enhance the international educational experience and provide students with courses at top European universities. However, many challenges need to be addressed for its success. Shared values? Academic freedom in international cooperation

Most academics and institutions in the EU stand for democracy and academic freedom in their own systems. But how to deal with challenges to freedom and good academic practice in other countries, some of them leading research nations? How can we stand for our values and still work with partners who do not share them, building bridges across political and cultural front lines? In 2019, ACA and DAAD published the „Eberbach Statement on European Values in Higher Education“. Is it still valid?

Czech universities on the way to sustainability

24 Czech universities are working together on the common project called University leaders in SDGs and starting to implement social, environmental and economic sustainability into university management, education and research, and partnerships. We believe that universities should be leaders in sustainability and aim to motivate other stakeholders to follow. The common project is still in the beginning phase, however, the impact the universities have are already visible.

European Commission presents: Promoting attractive and sustainable careers in Higher education; a European framework

As set in the European strategy for universities, academic staff are essential for thriving European higher education institutions. Yet, they face serious challenges: uneven recognition of their diverse roles (teaching, research, civic engagement, entrepreneurship, participation in academic governance), gender bias, insufficient European mobility, unsatisfactory employment conditions. The session will discuss inspiring practices in view of a European framework to encourage Member States and institutions to create conditions for more attractive, diverse and sustainable careers in higher education.

European Commission presents: Towards a user-driven Observatory on Higher Education in Europe

The European Higher Education Sector Observatory’s key objective is to monitor the implementation of the European Strategy for Universities on its policy priorities, building upon and streamlining of existing tools and datasets (ETER, U-Multirank, Eurostudent, Eurograduate). The Observatory will provide a gateway to data on higher education institutions, students and higher education systems in general (e.g., at the country and/or regional levels). The session will consider how such a policy-driven Observatory can support the policy objectives and knowledge demands of the Member States and higher education institutions while helping these to transform and adapt to the quickly evolving societal needs. Thus, the Observatory should also promote the competitiveness and attractiveness of higher education institutions.

Erasmus Without Paper: a bumpy pathway towards a bright future

Managing Erasmus+ mobility can be a cumbersome process. The Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) initiative uses the latest digital technology to replace paper-based workflows, allowing Higher Education Institutions to digitally exchange information. To ensure no one is left behind, EWP collaborates with a wide range of essential partners (National Agencies, third party providers, IRO user groups, etc.) to lay the technical foundation for the further digitalisation of the Erasmus+ processes.

Blended mobility is increasingly gaining support in view of lessons learnt from Covid-19, yet evidence shows the potential for blended mobility outside the pandemic context still needs to be embraced. Lack of experience, limited awareness of successful models and complementary approaches and concerns about quality and administrative components of delivery, lead to not fully realising the potential of virtual exchanges, as a complement to more established physical mobility formats. This workshop will address these challenges by:1. Exploring in detail the concept of virtually enhanced mobilities.2. Gathering and showcasing examples of good practice in blended student mobility by higher education institutions across Europe, from a multi-stakeholder institutional perspective (organisational & staff, pedagogical, students and external actors).3. Providing the opportunity to participants to interact with other participants and share their own good practices and/or challenges on this topic, fostering thus peer learning.

IMM: A successful cooperation between VET and HE European institutions

The cooperation between 5 different European institutions, 3 VET centres and 2 universities, made it possible to organize an international course that allows students to obtain 2 European VET qualifications and continue their career path in the two universities. The 5 institutions reached an agreement to organize the contents and recognize the training. An Erasmus project was further awarded which has allowed partners to set the basis and resources to open the experience across Europe.

Team Europe for students at risk? Defending democratic values and supporting higher education in times of crisis

With the Berlin Declaration from May 2022, the scientific exchange organisations of the G7 countries and partners from 8 other countries stressed the need to protect threatened academics (students & scholars). Also, the Council of the EU calls for European and national schemes for academics at risk to position the EU as a safe haven for academic freedom and democratic values. The workshop will present the ongoing initiatives and continue with discussion of next steps.

Towards internationalisation of teaching and learning: experiences and reflections from NEOLAiA alliance

The panel will discuss the potential of strategic collaboration in European university alliances drawing upon experiences from an alliance in the making – NEOLAiA. The speakers will focus on the internationalisation of teaching and learning, particularly in teacher education, presenting also the takeaway from their recent joint endeavour of a blended intensive programme for teacher trainees and the implications the teacher & student feedback brings for the next steps on the collaboration path.
